Hey John,
You are right about the interface + approval process however in case of influencers a hosted system won’t help too much either, since you usually don’t judge in terms of clicks/sales. If you consider it is helpful, you can easily have an invite-only hosted system as well used especially for custom deals like this, but for your open affiliate program use ShareASale.
My perspective is from running a business where affiliates bring around 10% of the sales and some big WordPress related advertisers are also part of ShareASale ( like WPEngine or StudioPress ), I believe that if nobody in your niche is using ShareASale, you should rather look in other places.

It’s an interesting read & specially learned a lot from your experience of running an affiliate program. I have been considering few options for myself & I was thinking to get a self hosted solution but now re-considering my options. I have used ShareaSale in the past (As an affiliate + running a program for a client), it’s good but again the only challenge is; the interface is bad & getting user onboard is tough. Especially their approval process is strict & not so friendly for new users. This becomes a problem when you have few influencer as a promoter who don’t have a website/blog. I guess, it’s time for me to figure out all the pros & cons of hosted Vs. non hosted solution. I would love to hear more from you, as you have used both the options.

Hey Andrew,
Hope the article and insights are useful for you, now about changing the affiliate system, what we do is to offer both options, hosted + shareasale, if you prefer everything in one place and automatic payments, then go on shareasale, if you want to have an account with us, use our own system.
In this way we didn’t migrate or upset users, some of them migrated at their own wish, others stayed.
