Hey Jane, Up and Running does cover WP_Query and the REST API. Neither is an exhaustive treatment but we think we do a great job orienting you to what those APIs are for and how to use them when the time comes. All the best!

I’m just in my second year of freelancing and launching a business in a pandemic has been tough. I maintain my rate of $75 an hour and I have clients that pay it but I have also lost a lot of work to offshore devs as well.

I will take a look at your course. I am working as a corporate WordPress dev and I am looking for a deep dive into wp query and working with the rest api.

Are these topics covered in this course?

Well, WordPress development is one kind of web development more broadly. To be a well-rounded web developer would typically take a more complete skillset than being a well-rounded WordPress developer. (For example, a full-stack web developer would want to understand a web development framework like Laravel for PHP, or Ruby on Rails, or Node/React for JavaScript, all of which fall outside of the knowledge a WordPress developer needs.)

So there are happy freelancers who do general-purpose web development, and happy freelancers who do only WordPress development. It comes down to your skillset.

Hope that’s helpful!

I especially like the fact that you mention specialization as I think it’s a great way to attract better clients and stand out from the crowd.

Thank you so much, David! 🙂

For most aspiring WordPress freelancers, I’d Google “wordpress meetup [my location]” – such as “wordpress meetup mississippi” or “wordpress meetup boston”.

You can also go on Meetup.com itself and browse its “technology” section, and you’ll find all kinds of interesting things, especially if you’re near a large city. So in your case, you may find a Meetup of people who are passionate about data architecture, or UI/UX.

I hope that helps!

Fred
