However, this statement is not entirely accurate; while Cloudflare does require you to use their DNS system exclusively when registering a domain with them (meaning you can’t point your domain to another provider’s nameservers), you do not need to have hosting with them.

In fact, they don’t even offer traditional web hosting as a service. The closest thing is their Cloudflare Pages product but that’s mainly for launching a static site. If you know how to use Cloudflare Workers, then you can add dynamic features like server-side rendering and API interactions to a site on Pages but that requires some development experience.

In short, you can absolutely use Cloudflare as a registrar while having your website hosted elsewhere.

All the websites and registrars that you mention have problems and in the main are not useable. Cloudflare for example ONLY offers domain registrations at these prices because you MUST be an existing hosting client and use their DNS system exclusively for the nameservers (So you cannot move your domain elsewhere or host your own website).

for NZ the cheapest domain provider is pogotick web services, best prices for registrations and renewals, although if you want full dns management you have to pay extra.
